Texas CHL (Concealed Handgun License) has been renamed to Texas LTC (License to Carry)
No matter what you decide to use to carry your CHL pistol in, make sure that you test your holster and the concealment, and when possible practice with it. It truly is a balance between accessibility, and reliability. The three options are in-waist, on waist, and pocket carry, with some other options, in our Other Options Webpage.
Also know as OSB or outside the waist band carry
CHL Waist Carry means that the holster is located around your waist, but outside of the waistband. This can be on the left or right side, or located in the center of back. The CHL Concealed Handgun is usually covered by a shirt, jacket, or vest when carrying using this method. This is our recommended way of carrying your CHL Concealed Handgun, but it also one of the most difficult as far as concealment is concerned.
Here is the main reason why we recommend this method of carry, in a self-defense situation, you may only have seconds (or less) to decide that the use of deadly force to defend yourself is justified and necessary to defend yourself and stop the threat; a concealed handgun on the outside of your waistband is the easiest and quickest way draw your weapon.
Also know as ISB or inside the waist band carry
CHL In-Waist Carry, your weapon is secure in a holster, that still attaches to your belt, but tucks inside your waistband of your pants. The location can be on the right, left, small of the back, or in the front. This carry method is easier to conceal than a CHL Waist Carry holster, however, it does take a little bit longer to draw your weapon. With practice, the time difference can be made minimal.
Frames that are small enough to be carried in a pocket are often called a BUG or Pocket gun
CHL Pocket Carry, your weapon is secure in a holster, located in your front or back pocket. The location can be on the right, left, one of your back pockets, or in a jacket pocket. This carry method is easier to conceal than a CHL Waist Carry holster and CHL IN-Waist Carry, however, it does take a little bit longer to un-holster your weapon. With practice, the time difference can be made minimal, but there are several draw backs to conceder. This carry method makes a great secondary, or backup CHL Carry Weapon.
