Learning how to handle recoil – Step 7: Use a Ported Gun

Some manufactures offer pistols with “porting” or small holes toward the end of the barrel that allow some of the gas a pressure to escape before it gets to the end of the barrel. This does reduce the recoil; however, it can increase the flash and smoke that you see when firing. As always, practice at the range to get used to the change, and, of course, get your hands, face, and other items away from the porting holes as the escaping gasses are hot and can burn you!
